Everything I Know About Freelancing I Learned from Someone Else
STC-Montreal Event | Posted December 17th, 2007
Everything I know about freelancing I learned from someone else: What I can teach you about the business of freelancing
“How long should I wait to get paid? Do I need to collect GST and QST? How do I deal with clients who keep changing their deadlines? What happens if I get sick and can’t work?” If you’re not sure of the answer to any of these questions, this talk is for you.
As a freelance technical writer you’re more than a content creator—you’re a businessperson, even if you’re the only person in your business. You need to know how to set up and run your operation to make the business of freelancing as painless and secure as possible. This talk is a basic guide to the following topics:
- Getting set up
- Being your own office manager
- Presenting yourself to potential clients
- Negotiating terms
- Doing a job like a pro
- Getting paid on time
