QWF Workshop: Spoken Down Under

This workshop is not sponsored by STC-Montreal.

Spoken Down Under: A Spoken Word Workshop

Offered in collaboration with the Voix d’Amériques Festival 2009

Thursday, February 12, 1:00 to 5:00
1200 Atwater Avenue, Room 3
Montreal, Quebec

Workshop leader: Alicia Sometimes

This workshop on writing for performance will introduce participants to the vibrant and eclectic Australian spoken word world. The workshop will culminate in a recording of your work (either written in the workshop or something you bring along) for broadcast on Australian radio. You get to keep your recording. The workshop is not just for writers wishing to be performers, it’s for anyone who wants to read their work, communicate with an audience and command captivation and anyone who just wants to try a different writing style and have some creative fun. No previous experience necessary.

Alicia Sometimes is an Australian poet, writer, broadcaster and musician. She has been published widely in many international journals. She has performed spoken word at venues, festivals and events in Australia and overseas, also appearing on the SBS TV program Nomad and ABC TV shows Recovery and Sunday Arts. Alicia has had many artistic residencies including one at the Melbourne Aquarium, and this year she will be part of a show called “Elemental” at the Melbourne International Arts Festival that will showcase poetry at the Melbourne Planetarium. Her work has appeared on many spoken word CDs, most recently Going Down Swinging, You Talkin To Me, Short Fuse and Synaptic Graffiti. As a broadcaster she has interviewed the likes of Geoffrey Robertson, David Suzuki, Sage Francis, Laurie Anderson, Henry Rollins, Gene Simmons, Ben Elton, John Cooper Clarke, George Negus, Peter Singer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and many more. She was co-editor of the literary journal Going Down Swinging (with audio CD) for seven years. Her latest collection of poetry is Soundtrack, released through Liner Notes Press.

Workshop fee: $60.00
