Double Header: “STC-Montreal Town Hall” & “Our Friends, the Programmers”
STC-Montreal Event | Posted May 13th, 2009
Join us on May 25, 2009 for an exciting double event:
- STC-Montreal Town Hall where you can air your concerns and questions about your STC chapter
- Our Friends, the Programmers with Manuel Gordon
Two events for the price of one!
STC-Montreal Town Hall
May 25, 2009 is your opportunity to speak out with your peers.
Come tell us what you need and want from STC and from your chapter. Also, come and meet the candidates for next year’s Administrative Council as well as the current and incoming volunteers.
Financially, STC-Montreal is strong and stable — but more challenging times may be ahead. We want to continue providing services that are of value to you but in this economic climate, we need to consider how every penny is spent.
We need your input more than ever. We need your suggestions and your participation if STC-Montreal is to continue to thrive and grow.
If you have any specific questions or issues you want addressed at the Town Hall meeting, please write a comment below or send an e-mail to president [at] stc-montreal [dot] org.
Our Friends, the Programmers
If you are a technical communicator who writes about software, programmers must provide much of the information you need, and programmers must review your documents.
But programmers are a breed apart. Intelligent, high strung and skittish, programmers often bolt or become mulish when brought face to face with a technical writer, even ones bearing chocolate chip cookies.
This presentation by Manuel Gordon will give you insight into what makes programmers tick, and suggestions for how to adapt your working style to theirs.
Topics include:
- How programmers think.
- How programmers like to work.
- How programmers like to communicate.
- Two different ways that programmers view their projects
- Finding the right programmers.
- How to motivate programmers.
- What you can give programmers that they can’t find elsewhere.
- What you must learn.
- How you must adapt.
If you can make it there, you’ll make it anywhere

Manny’s talk was a hit in New York City.
“Manuel Gordon … delved into the mindset and thinking of programmers and suggested ways to establish and maintain an effective communication channel with them, all with a tinge of humor.
“One factor that made this session stand out was the interactive nature of it. The audience participation was impressive….”

I nearly mis-read the meeting title as ‘Our Fiends, the Programmers….’
