Technical Writer

Position summary:
The Technical Writer researches and develops contents for training programs.

Responsibilities/daily tasks:

  • Develops written scripts into a document that will serve as the basis for eLearning and related training projects according to client specifications
  • Conducts research from subject and marketing material to identify the project’s content
  • Constructs and summarizes the written content for the software help files, tutorials, training material, user’s manuals, installation guides and other instructional materials

    • Share knowledge through technical writing, application documentation, and special training sessions with assigned Project Teams.
    •  Participate in planning, preparing and presenting workshops (both in-house and off-site) in order to meet defined needs
    •  Communicate with the Project Team and DOMT concerning training development and/or overall program status within the department, as required.
    •  Facilitate project start-up/kickoff meetings, as required, and ensure clear, timely, and effective project communications with and among the project teammates.
    • Collaborate with the DOMT and Team to develop and identify project plans, goals, timelines, materials, and resources required to design systems that will meet program needs.
    • Collaborate with eLearning Center teammates and other personnel to design, implement and evaluate tools, applications and other instructional products using various media environments (e.g., lesson plans with expanded instructor actions, storyboards, scripts, job aids, student guides, slides, transparencies, animation,
      etc.) that effectively meet the program’s goals.
    •  Define and communicate visual requirements and production of instructional components (e.g., graphics, video, computer animations, audio, and programming) to support lesson materials/programs with Project Team.

    Vendor Management:

    • Interact with the DOMT, other Team members and eLearning Center teammates regarding the identification, selection and management of various vendors who might be associated with the production of courseware materials as needed Collaborate and consult with Contract Team and vendor programmers and developers to create prototypes of new or proposed instructional strategies and features within and across all products.
    • Manage quality assurance/review process with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) at Center to ensure accuracy of content and sound instructional design principles are followed by vendor(s).
    • Accountable for “signing off” on milestones prior to vendor payment according to terms of the Contract.
    • Monitor and manage the activities of vendors in order to maintain timelines, budgetary requirements and completion of required products.

    Documentation and Reports Activities:

    • Gather, inventory, and maintain project reference data.
    •  Review vendor developed instructional materials for adherence to product standards.
    • Record discrepancy reports as required.
    • Interact with Team regarding proposal writing, as required.
    •  Interact with Team regarding preparing cost and milestone schedules for assigned projects, proposals, etc., as required.
    •  Report vendor adherence or divergence activities, as needed.

    Daily Responsibilities:

    • Maintain FlightSafety International’s commitment to customer satisfaction while performing job duties.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: (Minimum Requirements)
    Preferred:

    • Master’s Degree awarded upon completion of an academic, postgraduate course of one to three (1-3) years in duration. Normally requires completion of a four-year Bachelor’s Degree (B.A./B.S.), or extensive experience in the designated field, prior to entering the Master’s Program. There is no equivalency of work experience
      to holding a Master’s Degree.   Preferred field of study:  Instructional Technology or related field.

    Or

    • Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) from a four-year college or university preferred, or five (5) years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience; equivalency years experience substitution must be in related field.  Preferred field of study:  Instructional Technology or related
      field.

    In addition, without holding a Master’s Degree, this position requires a minimum of five to seven (5-7) years’ experience working in the field of Instructional Design of Interactive Multi-Media.

    Experience (recommended):  The following experience applies to both Master’s or B.A./B.S. degree holders:

    • Plus, three to five (3-5) years’ experience in a teaching/training environment, especially where the material is designed for adult (over 18 years old) participants.
    • In addition, special consideration is given for demonstrable skills in writing/developing materials for the above teaching/training environment.
    • Special consideration is given for documented/demonstrable skills in the preparation and writing of technical material.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, OR REGISTRATIONS:

    • Valid Driver’s License, where applicable.
